the appendix.

The Appendix - a useless organ?
By Rachel Mowers

Often times, something that seems completely useless proves to be extremely important. The appendix is a small, finger-like projection extending from the end of the large intestine. For years scientists have been plagued with questions over the tiny organ’s function in the body.

Some were confused by it, so they ignored it, thinking it too small to do anything important. Others decided it was an “extra” or “left-over” from the evolutionary process. They were so certain of this that they grouped it together with several other misunderstood organs and termed them “vestigial.”

Yet another group of scientists searched for its function and conducted experiments to discover its hidden use. Those in this third group were not content with the overall lack of knowledge concerning the appendix, so in their burning quest to think God’s thoughts after Him they worked tirelessly to uncover its divine purpose.

These scientists are the ones who have discovered that the appendix contains large amounts of white blood cell producing lymphatic tissue, trains leukocytes, and plays a role in fighting diseases in young children. They have reminded us of a very important fact: God has never created something useless.

He has given us the responsibility and privilege of discovering the unknown secrets of the universe that He created for our enjoyment. Whether the object of our quest be an organ, a mineral, a far out star, or our very own uncovered talents, God desires for us to discover the hidden worth in all of His marvelous creation.
